Azerbaijan, Baku, 30 June / Trend corr. K.Zarbaliyeva / Over 6,537,763 people received their identity cards in Azerbaijan, Arziman Aliyev, Chief f the Central Passport, Registration and Migration Department in the Internal Ministry, stated.
The reforms in issue of documents and identity cards have been launched from September 2001.
According to Aliyev, the state duty AZN 6.9mln was paid to the state budget with regard to issue passports. Approximately 97.4% of the population older 16 ages has been provided with identity cards till June 2008.
There are still citizens who do not change their passports of the former Soviet period with the national passports. Such cases are frequent in the Khatai, Azizbayov and Garadag Districts in Baku, as well as in Barda, Balakan, Goychay, Lankaran and Sabirabad regions of the country.
"In May 2008, some 30,881 people were provided with new passports," Aliyev said.
According to the Chief of the Department, totally 1,917,577 citizens were provided with passports during the period.
