Azerbaijani Opposition party May Bring Boycott Elections up for Discussions

Azerbaijan, Baku, 30 June / Trend corr. I.Alizade / The Assembly of the opposition Musavat party will reconsider the decision to participate in the upcoming presidential elections again. "The final decision regarding participation in the elections will be made in the Assembly of the party scheduled for early August," Sulhaddin Akbar, Chairman of the Assembly, told Trend .

In the end of 2007, the Assembly of Musavat made a decision to participate in the elections and nominated Isa Gambar's candidature.

Doubts occurred regarding participation in the elections after the recent supplements and changes made into the Election Code and Bill on Freedom of Assemble.

Azerbaijan will host the presidential elections on 15 October. Musavat party has already nominated its Chairman Isa Gambar, Azerbaijan Democratic Party - Sardar Jalaloglu, the Greens Party nominated Mais Gulaliyev, the Popular Front Party of Unified Azerbaijan nominated Gudrat Hasanguliyev and Musair Musavat nominated Hafiz Hajiyev. The head of the public forum For Azerbaijan Eldar Namazov stands for presidency as an independent candidate. The governing New Azerbaijan Party (NAP) will nominate country's current President Ilham Aliyev. Pro-governmental parties Ana Vatan and Social Prosperity Party intend to support Ilham Aliyev at the elections. Bloc Azadlig uniting three opposition parties (Popular Front Party of Azerbaijan, Citizen and Development Party, Liberal Party) intends to boycott the elections.

Taking into consideration the recent supplements and changes into the Election Code and Bill on Freedom of Assemble, Musavat party holds discussions.

"Musavat does not want to make mistake in the current complicated situation in the country. Therefore, all the organizations of the party have been involved into discussions. The Assembly will take the final decision after discussions," Akbar said.

Musavat faces dilemma to make choose out of several variants. Taking the decision to participate in the elections, party considered the issue to boycott the elections as well. Now we have to choose out of two versions, to participate or boycott the elections," Akbar stated.
