Azerbaijan, Baku, Jan. 16/ Trend , K. Zarbaliyeva/ Russia's law enforcement agencies have not yet responded to the inquiries by Azerbaijan's Prosecutor General Office about the 20 January tragedy that occurred in 1990. The USSR Prosecutor General's Office filed a suit on this case shortly after the event, spokesperson for the Azerbaijan's Prosecutor General Office Eldar Sultanov told Trend .
The materials of 68-voluem criminal case were sent to Moscow at that time.
Russia's law enforcement agencies have received inquiry which requests them to send materials back to Azerbaijan's Prosecutor General's Office and necessary documents to arrest liable persons. But law enforcement agencies have not responded yet.
Sultanov said the USSR Prosecutor General's Office closed case on Dec. 20 claiming that the military men did not commit crime. Azerbaijan's Prosecutor General Office canceled decision of the USSR Prosecutor General's Office on Feb. 14, 1992, and filed a suit on article 94 (willful murder), 149 (deliberate destruction of property) and 168 (abuse of authority) of the Penal Code.
The investigation revealed that the crime claimed 132 lives and injured 612. As many as 841 people were illegally arrested. Hundreds of buildings were destroyed. Citizens and government incurred great losses.
Azerbaijan's Prosecutor General Office have decided to hold liable Abdurrahman Vazirov, the then first secretary of Central Committee of the Communist Party of Azerbaijan and chairman of the Council of Ministers. They are on wanted list.
The case filed on Elmira Gafarova, the then head of the Supreme Council Elmira Gafarova and second secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Azerbaijan Viktor Polyanichko was closed after their death.
