Azerbaijan, Baku, Feb. 6 / Trend , N.Abdullayeva/
Ukraine considers Azerbaijan a strategic partner, Ukrainian Ambassador to Azerbaijan Boris Klimchuk told Trend on Feb. 6.
"Dynamics of relations between Ukraine and Azerbaijan at the highest political level testifies this fact," Klimchuk said. "In 2008 our presidents met thrice to discuss important issues of bilateral interaction on different fields of cooperation."
Independent Ukraine and Azerbaijan established diplomatic relations in Feb. 6, 1992.
Ukrainian and Azerbaijani nations together developed and gained independence by supporting each other, Klimchuk said.
At present the Azerbaijani-Ukrainian diplomatic relations are of 17 years, the ambassador said.
Ukrainian President Leonid Kuchma and Azerbaijani President Heydar Aliyev signed a protocol to open embassies in both countries on July 28 in 1995. The Ukrainian Embassy in Azerbaijan opened on May 5 in 1996. The Azerbaijani Embassy in Ukraine is operating since March 12 in 1997.
The Azerbaijani diplomatic representation opened in Kiev in 1918 and the Ukrainian special diplomatic mission was located in Baku in 1919.
"Thousands of Azerbaijanis studied in Ukraine. Our country remembers and commemorates Azerbaijani National Leader Heydar Aliyev who did a lot for Ukraine," Klimchuk said. "Bases of intergovernmental relations between Ukraine and Azerbaijan were laid with his direct participation."
