U.S. Football Federation willing to hold friendship match with Iranian national squad

The United States Football Federation has invited Iran Football Federation to hold friendship match between national squads of the two countries in Tehran, Cahan News reported.

The U.S. Football Federation sent an invitation earlier last week. Iran has not yet responded yet. "This issue is being studied at the moment and the federation will respond soon," ISNA quoted Head of the Iranian Football Federation Ali Kafashian as sating. The U.S. proposed to hold match at Azadi football stadium in Tehran. 

In early May, the U.S. Football Federation invited Iran's national squad to the U.S. The U.S. and Iran teams clashed as a part of the World Cup in 1998.

The U.S.-Iran diplomatic ties were severed in 1980 following attack on the U.S. embassy in Tehran. As many as 52 embassy workers were captured for 444 days.

As a response, then U.S. president Jimmy Carter signed a decree 12170 and announced emergency situation. The Obama administration has announced that talks with Tehran are possible.
