The U.S. Embassy in Kazakhstan made a statement on the sentence on ombudsman, Yevgeniy Zhovtis.

"We want to point out that the international community will monitor closely the appellate process, because Zhovtis plays a prominent role in the international community of ombudsmen, as well as in the preparation work on Kazakhstan's upcoming chairmanship to the OSCE," the embassy reported.

"Recently, we have expressed our concern on this case and insisted on the Kazakh authorities to provide Zhovtis a fair trial in accordance with the Kazakh laws," the same source added.

"We will continue to appeal for it during the appellate process," the statement said.

On Sept.3, the court of first instance condemned ombudsman, Yevgeniy Zhovtis, recognized in international circles, for criminal negligence resulting in serious consequences and sentenced him to four years imprisonment to be served in a penal colony.
