Presidents Ilham Aliyev of Azerbaijan and Traian Basescu of Romania held a joint press conference at the Cotroceni Palace after the ceremony of signing documents on Sept. 29, AzerTAj state news agency reported.
Joint Declaration on strategic partnership between Azerbaijan and Romania will open new prospects for cooperation, Aliyev said at the news conference.
President Ilham Aliyev said bilateral relations between Azerbaijan and Romania are "successfully" developing, adding 'documents signed today create good base for future development of ties.'
During the Azerbaijani President's official visit to Romania, the sides signed five agreements. These are a joint declaration on strategic partnership between the countries; an agreement on joint fight against transboundary organized crime and international terrorism; an agreement on cooperation in removal of consequences of the emergency situations; a memorandum of cooperation between the Azerbaijan Communications and Information Technologies Ministry and the Romanian Information Society Ministry in information technology and a memorandum on cooperation between the Ecology and Natural Resources Ministry and the Romanian Environment Ministry in environmental protection.
"Azerbaijan has rich oil and gas resources and Azerbaijan has successfully delivered its resources to the markets of the world and Europe. If contracts based on international practice are signed with the transit countries in the near future, the Azerbaijani gas may be supplied to the European Union's market beginning from 2010," the Azerbaijani president said.
Ilham Aliyev expressed his gratitude to his Romanian counterpart in Bucharest's position in the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict within the framework of international principles and territorial integrity.
"The position of providing for adherence to international principles for the settlement of frozen conflicts, including the Armenian-Azerbaijani conflict over Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, respect for the territorial integrity of countries is of great importance, and I thank you for it," the president said.
According to Aliyev, all the problems in the world, including the conflicts can be resolved only on the basis of international law. "I am convinced that if all parties to respect international law, the Armenian-Azerbaijani Nagorno-Karabakh conflict could soon find a just settlement of all occupied lands of Azerbaijan may soon be freed from the occupation forces," the Azerbaijani president said.
The Romanian leader thanked the Azerbaijani colleague for receiving his invitation.
Traian Basescu said 'this visit is a sum of joint work done within last four years. He said bilateral relations cover much more areas, praising energy cooperation.
Touching upon Nagorno-Karabakh conflict between Armenia and Azerbaijan, the President said his country supports resolution of the conflict within norms and principles of international law, and territorial integrity of the countries.
The Romanian leader said his country has signed a Joint Declaration on strategic partnership with only two countries, which are the United States and Azerbaijan and this document covers cooperation in political, economic and other fields. The Joint Declaration meets national interest of both countries, Basescu added.
