Georgia's President Mikheil Saakashvili spoke about a possible environmental disaster in Abkhazia during an international climate change conference in Cancun, Mexico today.
Initially, he addressed the conference in Spanish in tribute to Mexico and then in English.
"I want to emphasize the devastating impact of the Russian occupants and Abkhazian separatists on the ecology of the occupied territory," he said. "The Black Sea coast is experiencing abrasion due to the fact that enormous amounts of inert materials are transported from Abkhazia to build facilities for the Sochi Olympic Games. This leads to landslides and climate degradation."
Saakashvili also noted that "illegal searches for oil in the Black Sea" are carried out in secrecy in Abkhazia and "are not monitored. "
"However, the most unacceptable thing is that Georgia cannot stop to check these destructive environmental processes due to Russia's failure to follow the ceasefire agreement dated Aug. 12, 2008," he said.
