Azerbaijan marked the 20th anniversary of its independence in New York. A grand reception in honor of the 20th anniversary of Azerbaijan's independence, organized by Azerbaijan's Permanent Mission to the United Nations, was held in Cipriani - a prestigious hall of New York.
Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Elmar Mammadyarov and Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador Agshin Mehdiyev received congratulations at a reception in honor of the 20th anniversary of state independence.
Foreign ministers of Turkey, Iran, Georgia, Ukraine, Kyrgyzstan, Serbia, Bahrain and Syria, as well as several countries' permanent representatives to UN came to congratulate Azerbaijan on this occasion. The invited guests included representatives of the country's public members, intelligentsia and representatives of the Azerbaijani Diaspora in U.S..
On Jan. 21, Azerbaijani president signed a decree "On the twentieth anniversary of the restoration of Azerbaijan's state independence". The decree envisages conducting a solemn ceremony on state level in this regard.
A constitutional act "On the State Independence of the Republic of Azerbaijan" was adopted at the session of the Supreme Council of the Republic of Azerbaijan on Oct. 18, 1991. By this act Azerbaijan stated that it is successor of Azerbaijan Democratic Republic and declared its state independence and sovereignty to the international community. This day went down in history as the day of the restoration of Azerbaijan's state independence.
Flag, anthem and national emblem of Azerbaijan Democratic Republic was admitted as the state attributes, and May 28, the day of establishment of the republic, is celebrated as Republic Day.
