President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev is attending the Eastern Partnership summit, which started in Warsaw on Friday.

The summit of heads of states and governments of EU and the Eastern Partnership countries was opened by Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk. Welcoming the participants, Tusk spoke of the importance of the Eastern Partnership Programme.

The Summit should increase the pace of further improvement of mutual relations and of EU integration.

Political and economic aspects of cooperation, priority programs, cooperation with European financial institutions, visa regime, and other issues are to be discussed in the event.

The Eastern Partnership is a project which was initiated by the European Union (EU). It was presented by the foreign minister of Poland with assistance from Sweden at a the EU`s General Affairs and External Relations Council in Brussels on 26 May 2008. The Eastern Partnership was inaugurated in Prague on 7 May 2009.

The first meeting of foreign ministers in the framework of the Eastern Partnership was held on 8 December 2009 in Brussels.
