Azerbaijan, Baku, Feb.6 / Trend /

Chairman of the Azerbaijani parliament Oqtay Asadov has received the delegation led by member of the French Senate Nathalie Goulet, the press-service of the Azerbaijani parliament told Trend on Monday.

The chairman noted at the meeting that this visit of the French senators to Azerbaijan will serve further deepening of the relations.

He said Azerbaijan plays an important role in the Europe's energy security. Strategic projects implemented with the participation of Azerbaijan have a big importance in the South Caucasus's development.

"We support expansion of relations with France at parliamentary level. We think these relations give impetus to development of relations in other spheres as well. At present MPs of both countries cooperate in prestigious international parliamentary organizations, within different programs of the European Union," he said.

Mr Asadov noted with regret that the law on the so-called "Armenian genocide" adopted by France aroused big concern in the Azerbaijani society.

"If we take into consideration that France is one of the co-chairs of the OSCE Minsk group dealing with settlement of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, it's easy to understand concern of the general public. We hope the French Constitutional court will not allow this document directed at restricting human rights and freedom, to come into force," the chairman said.

He said it is historians who should deal with history. We shouldn't politicize event that took place quite long ago and transform it into subject of discussions at parliament.

It's impossible to understand how it is possible, closing eyes to the Khojaly genocide, which happened in the immediate past, and to over 1 million refugees, to simultaneously exaggerate and transform into subject of discussions some fabricated "genocide", he said.

"We call French politicians to be more careful in this issue," Mr Asadov said.

Nathalie Goulet expressed confidence in the further development of relations between France and Azerbaijan and hope that circumstances preventing from deepening relations between the two countries will be eliminated soon.

Head of the Azerbaijani parliament's apparatus Safa Mirzayev, chairman of the committee on international relations and interparliamentary ties Samed Seyidov, Azerbaijani ambassador to France Elchin Amirbayev and other officials also attended the meeting which continued in dialogue form.
