World War II veterans to be encouraged in Uzbekistan

Uzbek President Islam Karimov has today signed a decree on the material encouragement of World War II participants and invalids on the occasion of May 9 national holiday - the Day of Memory and Honour, as well as celebrating the 67th anniversary of Victory over Fascism.

Uzbek President Islam Karimov has today signed a decree on the material encouragement of World War II participants and invalids on the occasion of May 9 national holiday - the Day of Memory and Honour, as well as celebrating the 67th anniversary of Victory over Fascism.

According to the decree, World War II participants and invalids will get lump-sum compensation worth 400,000 sums from the republican budget.

The President instructed the relevant ministries and agencies to ensure the payment of compensations in a solemn and festive atmosphere and to hold special meetings dedicated to the defenders of freedom and honor of the motherland.

More than a million and a half Uzbek people participated in World War II, of whom about 450,000 were killed. At present, about 8,000 war participants and about 140,000 veterans who fought in the rear live in Uzbekistan.
