Iran is based on humanism, Islamic mercy and good neighbourly relations with Azerbaijan over the issue of the release of Azerbaijani poets, Iranian Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi told journalists in the province of East Azerbaijan, the Iranian agency Mehr reported.

Two Azerbaijani poets Farid Huseyn and Shahriyar Hajizade who were arrested in Iran on May 2 whilst taking part in the poetry festival were released last week.

The Azerbaijani side had sent five notes to the Iranian Foreign Ministry demanding it to provide information about detained citizens and arrange for employees of the Azerbaijani embassy to have a meeting with them.

The two Azerbaijani citizens were accused of trying to commit a crime.

Salehi described Iran as a reliable partner of Azerbaijan, which according to him, has been repeatedly confirmed by the official representatives of Baku.

"Azerbaijan and Iran are connected by common history, culture and religion and Tehran has always been interested in good relations with Baku. Any minor problems can be solved by diplomatic means," the head of the Iranian Foreign Ministry said.
