U.S. Ambassador Richard Norland expressed hope for the development of Russian-Georgian relations.
"I welcomed the statement made by the Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, who said that a meeting of representatives of the parties will be held in the near future. It will be good for both countries. I hope that relations between the two countries will develop," Norland said.
Military action was launched in the Georgian region of South Ossetia on Aug.8, 2008. Later Russian troops occupied the city of Tskhinvali and drove the Georgian military back. Russia recognised the independence of Abkhazia and South Ossetia in late August.
