The EU supports negotiations between Russia and Georgia in a neighborly manner , European Commissioner for Enlargement and Eastern Partnership, Štefan Füle said at a press conference in Tbilisi on Tuesday.

"We want to ensure that Georgia and Russia hold talks in a neighborly manner, given the specific role played by Russia in relation to unrecognized republics," he said.

Füle said that "a complete picture of foreign policy" of Georgia in the course of these negotiations will become clear.

"This certainty should benefit all citizens living in Georgia," he said.

Large scale military actions were launched in South Ossetia in Georgia on August 8, 2008. Later, Russian troops occupied Tskhinvali and expelled the Georgian military. Russia recognized the independence of South Ossetia and Abkhazia late in August. Tbilisi ended diplomatic relations with Moscow in response and has declared the two unrecognized republics of Abkhazia and South Ossetia occupied territories.
