The EU's High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Federica Mogherini will visit Azerbaijan early next year, according to Azerbaijani Deputy Foreign Minister Mahmud Mammadguliyev.

Speaking to reporters Dec. 2 in Baku, Mammadguliyev said that development of bilateral relations will be discussed during Mogherini's visit to the country.

Azerbaijan intends to play a major role in the energy security of Europe.

In particular, the Southern Gas Corridor - a project designed for transportation of gas from the Caspian region to Europe - aims to diversify the energy supply routes and sources, thus enhancing energy security of Europe.

The Southern Gas Corridor will ensure the supply of the Caspian gas to the European markets for the first time in history.

At an initial stage, the gas to be extracted during the second phase of development at Azerbaijani gas condensate field Shah Deniz is considered to be the main source for the Southern Gas Corridor.

At a later stage, other sources may join the project.

The gas to be produced as part of the second phase of the field's development will be exported to Turkey and to the European markets through expansion of the South Caucasus Pipeline and construction of the Trans-Anatolian Natural Gas Pipeline (TANAP) and the Trans-Adriatic Pipeline (TAP).

Afterwards, annually around six billion cubic meters of the gas to be extracted during the second phase will be delivered to Turkey, while 10 billion cubic meters of gas a year will go to Europe.
