BAKU, Azerbaijan, October 16. An event held at the headquarters of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, organized in collaboration with the COP29 presidency, focused on the interaction between climate change and global peace, Trend reports.

Participants included permanent representatives from UN agencies in Geneva, representatives from international humanitarian organizations, and delegates from UN member states.

Secretary General of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, Jagan Chapagain, opened the event by thanking Azerbaijan for highlighting the connection between climate change and peace, and praising the COP29 presidency's efforts in this area.

Chief Advisor to the COP29 presidency and Ambassador-at-Large of Azerbaijan's Foreign Ministry, Elshad Isgandarov, presented participants with the concept of Relief, Recovery and Peace Day, planned to take place during COP29. He emphasized that issues such as water scarcity, threats to food security, soil degradation, and increased migration due to climate change pose significant threats to international peace and security.

"Only 2 percent of climate financing addresses these issues affecting over 500 million people, leaving many developing countries trapped in hunger, conflict, and disease for years. Developed nations should focus on real disasters instead of politically motivated issues, taking practical steps in this direction. As the COP29 president, Azerbaijan is ready to serve real peace through proposed initiatives," Isgandarov said.

The event also introduced the concept of the Baku Center for Climate and Peacekeeping, initiated by the COP29 presidency, and the Baku Call for Climate Peace, including practical proposals.

Azerbaijan's Permanent Representative to the UN in Geneva, Ghalib Israfilov, underscored the significance of Azerbaijan's initiatives within the COP29 presidency's Action Plan aimed at strengthening international peace.

Discussions involving representatives from 42 countries and 12 international organizations highly praised the COP29 agenda, and participants received comprehensive answers to numerous questions.
