Supporters of proportion elections system should think about referendum functionary of ruling party

Supporters of the proportional elections system should firstly think about referendum, the deputy executive secretary of the ruling New Azerbaijan Party, MP Mubariz Gurbanly, told Trend.

Many heads of the opposition parties active in the country came out with a proposal on the application of proportional elections system. The issue also on focus of discussions among the heads of political parties held on 27-28 February at the initiative of the Baku Office of the OSCE.

Gurbanly said that in this situation the application of the majority election system did not justify itself. If the system does not justify itself in Azerbaijan, then it will be necessary to think over the application of another system.

Functionary of the NAP also noted that refusal from the proportion system and application of the majority elections through referendum held in 2002 was regulated by changes injected in the Constitution. Leaders of parties favoring the application of the proportional elections system should think over it, he underlined.
