Israeli Neurosurgeon from  Azerbaijan Becomes Member of US   Academy of  Sciences

Israel, Jerusalem /corr. Trend R.Abdullayev / Well-known Israeli neurosurgeon, Prof. of Tel Aviv University, emigrant from Azerbaijan, Arkadi Livshits, became a full member of the US Academy of Sciences. Livshits was named in Who Is Who book of the US Academy of Sciences under two nominations - medicine and health, Livshits reported to Trend on 27 December.

Prof. Livshits implanted miniature radio station into the human brain for the first time. As a result of his scientific activities, works and practical inventions, Livshits was conferred the rank of full member of the US Academy of Sciences. Along with neurosurgery, Livshits deeply copes with urology, plastic and common surgery and came to the idea of human body electrostimulation for the first time in the world medicine.

The Professor said that his principal innovations are micro neuro-surgical operations in the crossings of the pains and antispasmogenic operations in the spinal cord, methods of bloodless surgery which were implemented in Meir Hospital in Kfar-Sabe (center of Israel) and in Gertslisk Medical Center under his control.

Livshits was born in the capital of Azerbaijan, graduated from Baku State Medical University named after N.Narimanov and later went to Russia to work as surgeon. Defending his doctor dissertation, he worked at the Institute of Neuro-Surgery in Moscow in 1960- 1970. In 1977 he was appointed the Director and became founder of All-Union Center of Spinal Cord Surgery in Moscow. Livshits became professor. Before repatriation in Israel, he worked as doctor at the Institute in Moscow. Becoming Israeli neurosurgeon, in 2004 Livshits received gold medal 'Man of Year' in the USA, in 2005 - medal of Cambridge University 'Scientific of the 21st Century', as well as was elected the International Ambassador of Science. His books have been published in more than 30 countries of the world.
