Court Process on Appeal of Azerbaijani Officer Sentenced to Life Imprisonment in Hungary to Begin

Azerbaijan, Baku, 28 January / Trend corr. K.Zarbaliyeva / The appeal of Ramil Safarov, an officer of the Azerbaijani Armed Forces, will be considered on 29 January.

Safarov was sentenced to life-imprisonment for killing Armenian Army officer Gurgen Markaryan on 13 April 2006. The incident took place during a NATO seminar

On 13 April, 2006, Ramil Safarov, who was accused of killing Gurgen Markarian, an officer in the Armenian Army, was sentenced to life imprisonment. The appeal regarding the sentence was rejected. The Azerbaijani Justice Ministry applied to the Hungarian Ministry for extradition of the officer to his country. The extradition is delayed because he has one more court sentence (8-month prison term) which has not been served yet.

According to Safarov, Clara Fisher, the Hungarian attorney, will protect his rights.

The issue on extradition of the Azerbaijani officer to Azerbaijan to serve his sentence will be discussed during the visit of the Azerbaijani Justice Minister to Hungary.
