Attacks on Journalists in Azerbaijan Highlights Media’s Weak Economic Support - Press Council’s Chairman

Azerbaijan, Baku, 14 March / Trend corr K. Ramazanova/ The chairman of the Press Council of Azerbaijan Aflatun Amashov believes that the attacks on journalists in Azerbaijan highlight the weak economic support of the media.

"Until the Azerbaijani media receives economic support, such crimes towards journalists will continue," Amashov said after visiting the injured journalist of the opposition Azadlig newspaper Agil Khalilov on 14 March.

On 13 March, at 8.00pm Agil Khalil, a journalist of the Azadlig newspaper, was stabbed in the chest by unknown assailants. He was immediately taken to the Clinical Medical Centre where he was operated on.

" Azerbaijan's mass media serves many different organizations and people, and therefore the number of such crimes is rising," he said.

According to Amashov, the Press Council applied to the Prosecutor General's Office and the Interior Ministry urging them to investigate the fact. "It should be investigated as to who can benefit from this crime on the threshold of the elections," he said.
