Azerbaijan’s Parliament Passes Amendment in Convention on Discrimination of Women

Azerbaijan, Baku, 17 March / Trend corr I. Alizade / Azerbaijan's Standing Parliamentary Commission for Human Rights passed the amendment in the Convention for the Elimination of All Kinds of Discrimination against Women.

"The Convention stipulates for annual meetings at the UN Committee, on Elimination of Discrimination against the Women," Rabiyat Aslanova, the Chair of the Commission said at the parliamentary meeting on 17 March.

According to the UN Convention, meeting of the Committee on Elimination of Discrimination against Women shall not exceed two weeks.

"Untimely meetings delay discussion of different countries reports at the Committee. The amendment envisages further improvement of the Committee's effective activities," Aslanova said.

Now, duration of the meetings of Committee will be determined by the countries which joined the Convention and will be approved by the UN Secretary General.

Azerbaijan joined the Convention for the Elimination of All Kinds of Discrimination against Women in 1995.

The Commission recommended putting the document for discussion at the Parliament.
