Spain and Italy went into extra time in their Euro 2008 quarter-final on Sunday with the score at 0-0 after 90 minutes of a tight and unadventurous game between the two Latin rivals.

Spain had most of the play but were unable to break down the packed Italian defence and created relatively few chances.

The Spaniards went closest in the 81st minute when Italian keeper Gianluigi Buffon fumbled a shot from Marcos Senna on to the post.

The winner of the match will meet Russia in the semi-finals in Vienna on Thursday, Reuters reported.
