Millions of German football fans left public screenings across the country in disappointment after the national team's 1-0 defeat to Spain in the Euro 2008 final Sunday.( dpa )
Police said that despite the defeat in Vienna, most of the huge fan events passed off peacefully.
A number of minor injuries were reported in Munich's Olympic Stadium after several fans stormed the pitch after watching Germany slip to defeat.
One of the biggest open-air events was in the capital Berlin where a fan area around the Brandenburg Gate had to be closed more than three hours before the final after it was filled to its capacity of around 500,000.
"The fans have left in a very disciplined, very calm and well-behaved manner as fair losers," a police spokesman said.
Millions of Germans watched the final at fan zones around the country, in restaurants and bars, or at home. The television audience was estimated to be around 30 million.
Despite the defeat the Germany squad will return to Berlin on Monday to celebrate with the fans. A similar reception was organized at the 2006 World Cup after Germany finished third.
