Up to 40 athletes could fail doping tests at the Beijing Olympics next month, International Olympic Committee president Jacques Rogge said in an interview published on Saturday, dpa reported.

"You can expect 30-40 positive cases based on the number of doping tests," Rogge told the De Standaard daily from his native Belgium.

Rogge said the estimate had to do with the number of 4,500 doping tests to be carried out in Beijing. The Sydney 2000 Games had 12 positive cases from 2,500 tests and 26 athletes were caught doping four years ago in Athens from 3,500 tests.
