Blast in Abu Bakr Mosque Targeted at National Principles and Azerbaijan’s Statehood: Theologian Ilqar Ibrahimoglu

Azerbaijan, Baku, 18 August / Trend , corr J. Babayeva/ The explosion of two grenades in Abu Bakr mosque is a tragedy and it is targeted at humanity, mankind and national principles, and statehood of Azerbaijan, Ilqar Ibrahimoglu, chairman of the Center for Protection of Freedom of Consciousness and Faith DEVAMM and theologian said to Trend on 18 August.

On 17 August at 09.00P.M, blast took place in the Abu Bekir Mosque during the evening prayers. An unknown man broke mosque's window with stone and threw RGD-1 grenades into the mosque killing three and injuring five.

"Some 'tradition' has appeared in Azerbaijan recently not only to threaten but also take concrete terrorism steps right in the mosque. It should be condemned as it is dangerous and it is unusual for the Azerbaijani society. Therefore, I think that at the moment the phenomenon of the incident should be studied and then conclusions made about the reasons of the incident," Ibrahimoglu said.

The Azerbaijani society should see the incident as a blow to the moral and spiritual security, he said. "One should think of it very seriously as it is first precedent when people settle their scores in a mosque," Ibrahimoglu said. It was once usual for Russia where the people who called themselves Muslims settled their score in this way, but it is not natural and quite unexpected for Azerbaijan," he added.
