Azerbaijani Boxer Charged of Blackmail Set Free

Azerbaijan, Baku, 10 September / Trend corr. S.Kazimli / Vugar Alakbarov, a former member of the Azerbaijani National boxing team and winner of bronze medal in the Sidney Olympic Games, was set free at court hall. He was charged of blackmail.

Alakbarov, who convicted in accordance with Article 322.1 (hooliganism) of the Criminal Code, was released at the Serious Crimes Court's sentence on 10 September, and three months and 22 days, which he served at the prison, was considered as his punishment term.

The boxer who is charged with demanding $10,000 from Kanan Guluyev, the founder of Inshaatchi E Closed Joint Stock Company, by blackmail was detained by the officers of the Counter Organized Crime Department of the Interior Ministry on 16 May 2008.

Alakbarov was jailed at the decision of Narimanov District Court of Baku. Alakabarov said in his statement that he has sold Audi and Lexus cars to Kanan Guluyev.

Guluyev was owed the boxer $10,000 for the first and $32,500 for the second car. In exchange to debt, Guluyev gave Alakabarov BMW worth $9,000 and cement worth AZN 3,500.

Alakbarov demanded Guluyev to repay the debt more than once.

Last time when they met near Qurd Qapisi restaurant, Alakbarov demanded Guluyev to pay debt, but the latter returned the keys of his cars to him and asked to give them back after he repays the debt.

He said after their meeting he was arrested by police in Bosfor cafe.
