Azerbaijani geologists consider intensification of mud volcanoes in Azerbaijan as a precursor of earthquakes, the Institute of Geology "mud volcanoes" department head, doctor of geological-mineralogical sciences Adil Aliyev told Trend.
"Research conducted by the institute showed that the volcanic activity in the mud volcanoes begins to activate before weak earthquakes (2-3 points). Gas is exuded. Water with chemical elements increases. They confirm that somewhere there is preparation for Earthquake ", geologist said.
He said that the Institute of Geology, together with Azerbaijani seismological service plans to monitor by fixing of volcanic activity daily.
"According to the results of monitoring, exact relationship of mud volcanoes with occurring earthquakes will be revealed. Head of "mud volcanoes" department noted that afterwards earthquakes can be partially predicted," Aliyev said.
There are about 40-45 percent of all mud world volcanoes in Azerbaijan.
