Doha hosted Azerbaijani Culture Days this year for the first time in the history of Azerbaijan-Qatari relations. The days were held during Azerbaijani Culture and Tourism Minister Abulfaz Garayev's official visit to Qatar June 1-4, the Azerbaijani Embassy in Qatar told Trend.

Garayev held several meetings with Qatari officials, including Qatari Culture Minister Hamad Bin Abdul-Aziz Al-Kawarri, the leadership of the Association of Museums, and also visited Al-Jazeera.

The days opened with prominent Azerbaijani composer Uzeyir Hajibeyov's opera "Leyli and Majnun." Al-Kawarri and Garayev attended the opening ceremony.

In his speech, Al-Kawarri stressed the event's importance for Doha, which was declared the capital of Arab culture in 2010. Given the special relations and closeness between the two countries, the event holds special significance, he said.

The opening ceremony was also attended by officials from both countries, Azerbaijani MPs, representatives of the diplomatic corps, media and the Azerbaijani community in Qatar.

On the second day of the event, the Ancient Musical Instruments Ensemble and the State Dance Ensemble performed. The works of Azerbaijani artists were also exhibited at the event.

Qatari Culture Days were held in Baku June 6-11, 2009.
