UNESCO Director-General Irina Bokova has toured the Icharishahar, Inner City, historic core of Azerbaijan`s capital, AzerTAj State News Agency reported.

UNESCO Director-General Irina Bokova has toured the Icharishahar, Inner City, historic core of Azerbaijan`s capital, AzerTAj State News Agency reported.

While strolling along the Icharishahar, Bokova was informed about the history of the State Historical and Architectural Reserve, which is included in UNESCO`s World Heritage List.

The UNESCO chief first visited the Palace of Shirvanshahs, built in early 15th century and considered as one of the landmark architectural monuments of Azerbaijan.

She visited the 12th-century Maiden Tower and Bukhara and Multani Karavansarai.

Bokova also familiarized herself with the reconstruction and conservation work at the "Mahammad" mosque built in 11th century.

The UNESCO chief had a tea party in the Inner City.

Bokova praised reconstruction and land improvement work in the Inner City, which is carried out under the auspices of President Ilham Aliyev and first lady, President of the Heydar Aliyev Foundation, Goodwill ambassador of UNESCO and ISESCO Mehriban Aliyeva.
