Ecology Ministry: Azerbaijan establishes weather station on highest point among CIS countries

Azerbaijan, Baku, Aug. 19 / Trend M.Aliyev /

The Azerbaijani Ecology and Natural Resources Ministry commissioned an automatic meteorological station, which is installed on the highest point among the CIS countries - at 4,172 meters - on top of the Tufandag Mountain, Ministry's Spokesman Irada Ibrahimova told Trend today.

Thus, Azerbaijan commissioned the last-the third station designed for a complex of hydro-meteorological and environmental research center. The center's first station is located at an altitude of 3,700 meters on the Shahdagh Mountain and the other is located at an altitude of 2,700 meters on the Shahduzu Mountain and was put into operation in 2009. The energy required for operation and maintenance of communications for all three stations is produced by solar panels.

These stations will serve for a comprehensive scientific study of ecosystems of Bazarduzu, Shahdagh and Tufandag mountains.

The largest active glaciers in the territory of Azerbaijan are located near the top of the Tufandag Mountain. A reduction of glaciers is observed in connection with global warming around the world. It will be possible to monitor climate change on the territory of Azerbaijan by observing the glaciers and weather conditions through these stations.
