Azerbaijani Ombudsman Elmira Suleymanova appealed to the prosecutor general this week after receiving an appeal from a group of detainees who claimed they were beaten by the authorities.
Members of the Ombudsman Office's national preventive mechanism against torture and other cruel, anti-human and degrading treatment and punishment visited the Justice Ministry's Baku Remand Prison Service in connection with the appeals of 12 detainees.
One detainee claimed that he was assaulted at a checkpoint in Astara and mistreated by the State Customs Committee's Investigation Department.
A protocol was filed into the incident.
Suleymanova appealed to the prosecutor general to ensure the issue is objectively investigated. She also ordered a forensic evaluation.
The detainees did not complain about the prison conditions.
