Transferring the authorities on media issues to the Ombudsman's Office is a reasonable move, Azerbaijani Presidential Administration Department head Fuad Alasgarov said today.
Freedom of information is included in the human rights system, he said at an international conference on the sixtieth anniversary of the Council of Europe Convention on Human Rights. From this point of view, the transfer can be said to be reasonable, he added.
Alasgarov said the Ombudsman's Office has established close ties with civil society, as well as with media outlets and has experience in this sphere.
A joint meeting of the parliamentary committees on human rights, legal policy and state-building also discussed the bill to transfer the media authorities to the ombudsman.
The bill on amendments to the constitutional law on the human rights commissioner was recommended for consideration at a recent parliamentary meeting.
