Azerbaijan, Baku, Dec. 17 / Trend K.Zarbaliyeva /

Migrant workers residing in Azerbaijan are mostly working in the construction and oil sectors.

Today, 8,800 foreigners and stateless persons have been granted permission to work with the issue of wages in Azerbaijan, Azerbaijani Labor and Social Protection Ministry's Immigration Control Department chief Rauf Tagiyev told Trend on Friday.

The areas in which labor migrants work also include tourism, manufacturing, hospitality, education and other areas, he said.

About 5,000 people of the labor migrants working in Azerbaijan with an individual permit are Turkish citizens, and more than 1,500 - British. Citizens of China, India, Georgia, Iran, Russia and other countries also work in Azerbaijan.

Tagiyev said this year's labor migration quotas allocated to 10,700 people, and the following year - 9,815 people.

He said the labor migration quota is set taking into account labor market conditions, composition of jobs, professions of higher, secondary and vocational schools, the number of newly created jobs, and other indicators.

"Due to the fact that new infrastructure projects in the country belong to the sphere of construction, telecommunications, information technologies and oil extraction and refining, the main need is to specialties in these areas," Tagiyev said.

According to the State Migration Service the number of migrants in the country is more than 400,000 people.

Dec.18 is International Day of Immigrants. On Dec. 18, 1990 the UN General Assembly adopted the International Convention for the Protection of the Rights of All Migrant Workers and Members of Their Families. On Dec. 4, 2000 the UN General Assembly established the International Day of Immigrants, which is annually celebrated on Dec.18. The decision to mark the International Day of Immigrants was made due to the fact that in recent years, the number of immigrants worldwide has increased significantly.

Azerbaijan ratified the convention on Dec. 11, 1998.
