The number of persons infected with HIV through sexual contact increased in Azerbaijan, the Azerbaijani Health Ministry told Trend.
Azerbaijan is among the countries that recorded a small number of people infected with HIV and the epidemic is spread mainly among drug addicts who take drugs by injection. However, the number of people infected through sexual contact grew in recent years, the ministry reported.
In 2010, 52 people infected with AIDS died in Azerbaijan. During this period, the number of people on whom the disease passed to this phase reached 244 people.
Azerbaijan recorded 459 persons infected with HIV in 2010. Of them, 97.4 percent are citizens of Azerbaijan and 2.6 percent are foreigners. 80.3 percent of the registered people are men and 19.7 percent are women.
