Freedom restriction as a punishment will be withdrawn from the Azerbaijani Criminal Code.

A draft law "On making amendments and additions to the Criminal Code" has been submitted for consideration at a meeting of the Parliamentary Legal Policy and State-Building Committee on Tuesday.

Freedom restriction is a formal form of punishment, Chairman Ali Huseynli said addressing the meeting. Sometimes its execution contributes to an unhealthy relationship between a prisoner and sentence serving institution's leadership.

After adopting this law, the punishment will be replaced by corrective work and fines. In addition, the courts will review the cases of prisoners punished with freedom restriction based on the appeal of the prisoner or the appeal of the sentence-serving institution.

Huseynli said it is necessary to abandon punishment that does not help prisoners rehabilitate.
In total, 101 amendments will be made to 42 articles of the Criminal Code.
