In Azerbaijan, 17 special institutions for prisoners sentenced to restriction of freedom will be liquidated, the Deputy Minister of Justice, the Head of the Penal Service Madat Guliyev said on Tuesday.

According to him, the liquidation of institutions is related to the fact that the punishment in form of restriction of freedom was removed from the Penal Code.

Guliyev estimated the liquidation of this punishment as a correct step, and noted that this punishment actually promoted corruption in these institutions and there were no conditions for inmates in these institutions.

According to Guliyev, there were about 2,000 prisoners in these institutions. After the punishment in form of restriction of freedom was removed, work is underway to replace the punishment of those prisoners to another form of punishment.

"After these institutions will be liquidated, we will have a large staff potential. These employees will be sent to vacant positions," said Guliyev.
