Azerbaijan, Baku, October 18 /Trend M. Aliyev/

Cancelling daylight saving time switch may be important only in terms of compliance with the time differential in the neighbouring states of Azerbaijan, where there are close relationships, deputy chairman of the Parliamentary Committee on Social Policy Musa Guliyev told Trend.

As for the talk about saving electricity by switching to daylight saving time, we don't achieve a special time saving, the MP said.

"First of all, Azerbaijan has enough energy resources. Secondly, we have not yet learned how to save electricity. If on the one hand, we save it by moving the clock, then on the other hand, we spend an excessive amount of electricity both at public facilities and at home not only for hours, but also days and months. It would be better to increase the culture of power spending," the MP said.

Guliyev, a doctor by profession, said the transition to daylight saving time has much less effect on the human health than the other negative factors from a physiological point of view.

"Today, increased radiation level, contamination of water, soil and food quality - everything is not up to par. I'm not even talking about genetically modified foods. On this background, a daylight savings time switch may further affect the human body. However, physiologically, people will have to adapt to time changing in a day or two," the MP added.

Daylight saving time switching will be carried out on October 28 in Azerbaijan.

Shifting to daylight saving time is made by a decision of the Azerbaijani Cabinet of Ministers 'Upon the application of daylight saving time in the Azerbaijan Republic' dated March 17, 1997. By moving clock hands an hour clockwise at 04:00 on the last Sunday of March Azerbaijan shifts to daylight saving time. By moving clock hands back an hour on the last Sunday of October, Azerbaijan shifts to winter time.

Control over the execution of this decision is entrusted to the Azerbaijani State Committee on Standardisation, Metrology and Patents.
