Preventive measures to protect the ecology of the Caspian Sea were discussed in Ashgabat at a conference at the Institute of Oil and Gas of Turkmenistan, the Ministry of oil and Gas Industry and Mineral Resources said on Wednesday.

The event was attended by representatives of various oil and gas complexes, state concerns and research institute heads.

The agenda of the conference included such issues as the protection of the environment for the processing of hydrocarbon raw materials, oil and gas production, impact of offshore pipelines, assessment of the degree of contamination of the Cheleken Peninsula, and prevention of pollution of the Caspian Sea with the unclean drainage of enterprises and flooding of oil and gas fields of the coastal zone.

The Caspian Sea washes the coast of Azerbaijan, Russia, Kazakhstan, Iran and Turkmenistan.

The route to Europe via the Caspian Sea and Azerbaijan looks more attractive for Turkmenistan, ranking fourth on the largest natural gas reserves in the world (after Russia, Iran and Qatar). The Turkmen side expressed readiness to conduct an appropriate environmental review with international experts to implement this project.
