Heydar Aliyev Avenue will be closed during the 'Tur de Azerbaijan' bicycle race dedicated to the 90th anniversary of the national leader Heydar Aliyev, it was reported at a press conference dedicated to the bike race on Monday.

At the conference, Vice-President of the Cycling Federation of Azerbaijan Sahib Alakbarov and a representative of the Federation Alberch Robert answered questions from journalists.

"At least 600 athletes from 25 teams will take part in the Tur de Azerbaijan. This year's route is slightly different from the last year's insomuch that those areas that are included in this route are more attractive. We want the whole world to see the incredibly beautiful and fascinating places of Azerbaijan," Alakbarov said.

Heydar Aliyev Avenue will be closed since May 1, Alakbarov said.

"We understand that the closure of the road is not good news for our drivers, but I would like to bring to your attention that the roads are closed in any state where such competitions are held. For example, while it was being held in Turkey the well-known bridge over the Bosphorus was closed," Alakbarov said.

Questions about favourites were answered by Alberch Robert. According to him, there are a lot of favourites, but the athletes from the Netherlands, Luxembourg and Kazakhstan can mentioned among them.

The athlete, who wins first place will be in a blue T-shirt, Alberch Robert added.

In addition, the best sprinter will wear a green T-shirt and the best marathon runner a red one.

According to Alakbarov, the colours of the T-shirts are chosen to match those on the national flag of Azerbaijan.

The bicycle tour will take place on May 1-5.
