AZERI OMB INTERVIEWED FOR POST OF CE COMMISSAR ON HUMAN RIGHTS

On Monday Elmira Suleymanova, the Azerbaijani Ombudsman, passed an informal interview in Strasbourg for the post of CE commissar on human rights. The Institute of Ombudsman told Trend the commissar will be elected by the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) with the majority of votes among 8 candidates.

Candidacies from 8 countries вЂ" Sweden, Finland, Belgium, Germany, Hungary, Poland, Latvia, and Azerbaijan were nominated for this post by the CE Ministerial Committee. The commissar is elected for 6 years. After informal interview with candidates a meeting of the CE Ministerial Committee to be held on Wednesday will elect 3 candidates and introduce to the PACE. On 15 September they will pass an interview at the sub-committee on human rights of the PACE Committee on law and human rights. A final resolution on the issue will be taken at the PACE more probably in autumn session in October.

Alvaro Hill Robless, the first CE commissar on human rights, was elected to this post in 1999.
