(news.yahoo.com) - "Dreamgirls" star Jennifer Hudson will receive the Breakthrough Performance Award at the 18th annual Palm Springs International Film Festival, (January 4-15). The former "American Idol" contestant last week earned a Golden Globe nomination for her acclaimed supporting role in "Dreamgirls," which opens nationally on Christmas Day.

Additionally, Cate Blanchett will receive a career achievement award, while Philip Glass will be honored for his composing.

Comedy icon Carl Reiner will receive an Honorary Life member award from the Directors Guild of America during its 59th annual DGA Awards Dinner, set for February 3 at the Hyatt Regency Century Plaza in Century City.

Reiner, host of the DGA Awards for about 20 years, is famed for his work on such TV shows as "The Dick Van Dyke Show" and "Caesar's Hour."

The Writers Guild of America West will honor producer-writer John Wells with its Paddy Chayefsky Laurel for excellence in television writing during its annual awards ceremony on February 11 at the Hyatt Regency Century Plaza in Century City.

Wells, who has won six Emmys on shows including "The West Wing" and "ER," follows in the footsteps of previous winners such as Steven Bochco, Larry Gelbart, Rod Serling, David E. Kelley and last year's honoree, Stephen J. Cannell.
