Azerbaijan, Baku / Trend corr. I.Alizadeh / MP Ali Ahmadov , the deputy chairman of the ruling New Azerbaijan Party (NAP), has stated that the press in Azerbaijan is under a criminal situation. A deep analysis will reveal that the main reason for this is the representatives of the media themselves. The Azerbaijani Government created all conditions for the freedom of speech.

MP said that a range of media bodies distort the conception of freedom of speech. Presently, freedom of speech and press has become a mockery. Some bodies of the media function as political organizations resulting in calumny, insult and blackmail which has become a frequent situation.

"Presently, the media function not, as means of mass information, but as means of mass moral terror," MP considered.

Ahmadov said that the will of some newspaper representatives to gain political asylum was a political show. "If somebody wants to go abroad to lead a comfortable life, there are more civil ways to do it," MP added.

Ahmadov suggested changes in the Law on Media. The mechanism peacefully regulating the contradiction issues regarding press towards people and press towards society should be created.

NAP was founded in 1992. Heydar Aliyev had been the chairman of the party for fourteen years. The President, Ilham Aliyev, is presently the chairman of the party.
