Reconstruction of Georgian Airport to be completed soon

BAKU, Azerbaijan, December 12

By Tamilla Mammadova – Trend:

Reconstruction of Kutaisi International Airport in Georgia is in its final stage, said Georgi Chogovadze, head of the Georgia Airports Association (GAA), Trend reports citing Georgian media outlets.

According to him, the construction of a new terminal in Kutaisi airport will be completed in a short time and the terminal will receive the first passengers in the fall of 2020. The average annual throughput of the new terminal will be 2 million passengers.

As reported, as a result of the reconstruction, the airport's throughput will be increased by 4 times, and it will be able to serve 1,200 passengers per hour without interruption.

Currently, Kutaisi International Airport can serve 300 passengers per hour. Upon completion of the construction of the new passenger terminal, the airport will have 7 exits (the so-called gate).

The design of the renewed terminal of Kutaisi International Airport is handled by the Dutch architectural company UN Studio. An analysis of the development of the airport was prepared by IATA Consulting, which determined all the standards that the airport should satisfy.

According to Chogovadze, in 2019 important decisions were made to develop all five Georgian airports - three international and two local. He paid special attention to the statistics of passenger traffic at airports.

He said that passenger traffic in the airport of Tbilisi decreased by 18 percent. Instead of a 15 percent forecast growth, only a 7 percent increase was observed at Batumi Airport. The only international airport that exceeds expectations is Kutaisi Airport.

Kutaisi International Airport increased passenger traffic by 41 percent year-on-year. According to data for 11 months, the airport served 791,399 passengers.
