Construction of first private photovoltaic power plant in Uzbekistan starts

BAKU, Azerbaijan, Jan. 7

By Klavdiya Romakayeva - Trend:

UAE’s Masdar (Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company PJSC) has started construction of a solar photovoltaic station in the Karmaninsky district of the Navoi region in Uzbekistan, Trend reports referring to the press service of the Ministry of Energy of Uzbekistan.

The ministry said that all the necessary infrastructure for the construction of the facility has been prepared at the construction site. The launch of the photovoltaic power plant is scheduled for October 2021.

Earlier it was reported that Masdar won the tender for the construction of the country's first private photovoltaic power plant in the Navoi region with a capacity of 100 MW and has committed to supply electricity for 25 years at a price of $2.679 per kilowatt-hour.

The plant will generate 270 gigawatt-hours of electricity annually from solar energy, enough to power more than 31,000 homes. It will also prevent emissions of 156,000 metric tons of greenhouse gases per year.

The International Finance Corporation (IFC) and ADB will provide up to $60 million to finance the project. The plant will be the first industrial-scale power plant based on renewable energy sources.

To date, Uzbekistan generates 85 percent of its electricity at thermal power plants. Thanks to solar energy, the country will be able to reduce its dependence on natural gas and coal.

The plant will also increase the use of renewable energy sources and contribute to electricity production, which is projected to grow from 65,000 gigawatt hours (GWh) in 2019 to 103,000 GWh by 2030 to meet rapidly growing demand across the country.

It was also reported that the project company Nur Navoi Solar LLC will manage the station in the future.
