The Azerbaijan's Ministry of Agriculture wasn't notified of suspension of Merdeken Broyler and Hovsan Broyler biggest poultry factories' activity, Bahram Aliyev, deputy minister of agriculture, said on Jan. 28.

"First, the Ministry will reveal reasons of suspension of broyler factories' activity, Aliyev said.

Problems of poultry factories are likely to be connected with lack of birdseed which increased in price, he said.

"Import of birdseed should be free of VAT to provide these factories with birdseed and to improve their conditions. If thses factories have already applied to the government, their proposals will be aproved," deputy ministe said.

Merdeken Broyler and Hovsan Broyler two biggest poultry factories suspended their acivities in October 2008. The factories suspended their activities gradually because of bankruptcy caused by high prices for keeping of production, especially, birdseed's rise in prise, Aydin Veliyev, head of Azerbaijan's poultry association, said.

Poultry Association repeatedly applied to the country's government to import birdseed free of VAT, Veliyev said. Presently, 90 percent of birdseed is imported and it leads to great expenditures for factories.

Poultry Association included 29 enterprises before closing of two abovementioned factories. So, 28 of them are poultry factories and only one is a distributor of veterinary medical products. The number of employees, dealt with poultry keeping in Azerbaijan, totals 15,000-20,000 people.
