An additional five foreign banks plan to get a license to operate in the banking market in Turkey, the Sabah newspaper quotes Turkish Banking Regulation and Supervision Agency Director Mukim Oztekin as saying on Tuesday.
According to Oztekin, the number of banks will increase to 60 in the coming years.
Banks with assets exceeding $100 billion are among those that appealed for a license. The Dutch Rabobank, Industrial and Commercial Bank of China, the Japanese Mitsubishi Bank, the Italian Intesa Bank and the British Standard Chartered Türkiye have already applied for a license and are waiting for a response.
Oztekin said the share of foreign participation in the total capital of the Turkish banking sector is 16.7 percent, and this figure does not pose any risk to the country's banking sector.
