Afghani crack is being smuggled into Iran amid the rate of Iranian users being on the increase, Shargh newspaper quoted the Deputy Secretary General of Iran's Drug Control Headquarters Taha Taheri as saying.

The on-going surge of heroin consumption means increasing the use of a common injection which is likely to create an HIV tsunami, the report said.

Some 91 percent of addicts in Iran are men, of which 21 per cent are well educated, Shargh quoted Taheri as saying.

With regard to the age rate of drug users in the country, the15-19 age group make up a 56.3 per cent share of addicts, while the 20-24 and 25-29 age groups share 16.83 and 32.14 per cent respectively, Taheri added.

According to official statistics, there are about two million drug addicts living in Iran.

It has been reported that 500 tons of drugs were seized during the last solar year (ended on March 10) in the country, with 115 tons of that amount being seized during the first three months of the Iranian calendar year.
