WB postpones granting of additional funds for water projects in Azerbaijan for 2014

The World Bank (WB) plans to provide additional funding for projects in the water sector of Azerbaijan in October 2014, WB's Baku office told Trend on Thursday.

"Azerbaijani government is interested to receive additional funding for the water projects. The Bank has received a request from the government for $100 million for the second project and expects a similar request on the first project. The Bank plans to start preparing the granting of additional funding in October 2014, when the state will decide the volume of funding for both projects," the bank said.

The World Bank is implementing two 'National Water Supply and Sanitation' projects in Azerbaijan. The WB's first water project includes the complete restoration of water supply and sanitation in Shamakhi, Gabala, Saatli and Sabirabad districts. The second project covers works in Siyazan, Shabran, Agsu, Ismayilli, Masalli, Lerik, Yardimli and Jalilabad dictricts.

"The works are carried out in 12 districts. According to the plan, by late 2013 the new water systems should operate in the five districts of the country," the Bank said.

The World Bank allocated a total of $490 million for these works, some $ 230 million of them were allocated as a part of the first project (with its total value of $310 million), and $260 million were allocated within the second project ($410 million).
