Turkmenistan increasing electricity exports to Afghanistan

The Turkmenenergo State Corporation plans to conclude a contract with the Da Afghanistan Breshna Sherkat company to supply energy to Afghanistan over the Atamyrat (Turkmenistan) - Andkhoy (Afghanistan) route starting January 1, 2018 and continuing until December 31, 2027.

The Turkmenenergo State Corporation plans to conclude a contract with the Da Afghanistan Breshna Sherkat company to supply energy to Afghanistan over the Atamyrat (Turkmenistan) - Andkhoy (Afghanistan) route starting January 1, 2018 and continuing until December 31, 2027.

The corresponding decree was signed by Turkmen President Gurbanguly Berdimuhammadov.

The agreement calls for carrying out delivery of Turkmen electricity to foreign countries, provided for in the "Concept of development of electric power industry of Turkmenistan for 2013-2020."

In February 2014, President Gurbanguly Berdumuhammadov said that Turkmenistan is ready to consider proposals to increase the supply of its electricity to Afghanistan, which in recent years
was supplied on concessional terms on a regular basis.

Earlier, it was reported that five high-voltage transmission lines, with a length of more than 900 kilometers, will be erected in the Lebap and Mary provinces (regions) of Turkmenistan , including in Serdar-Farap, Farap-Watan, Pelvert-Atamyrat, Mary power station-Atamyrat and Atamyrat-Andkhoy.

At this stage, work is underway to expand the export of Turkmen electricity to Afghanistan, Iran and Turkey.

Also, officials are reviewing export opportunities to Tajikistan, Kazakhstan, Pakistan and Caucasus.
